The Donges Story
Visit Young’s Donges SUPA IGA any day of the week and you are sure to see Robert Donges in-store checking the local produce (some of which he has grown himself!) or making sure customer service is up to his high standard.
A long history of growing & selling local Young produce…
A third generation Young local, Robert’s family have long been involved in local food production owning orchards and market gardens. Robert has kept up the family tradition growing a range of summer and winter crops such as squash, zucchini, pumpkin, beans and peas.
You don’t get much fresher than the Donges SUPA IGA produce – straight from the paddock just outside of town and sold directly through the supermarket.
Almost instinctively Robert knows quality products when he sees them. A passion for the best produce from regional suppliers is what drives the excellent quality Donges has today become renowned for.
A lifetime in the supermarket industry…
Robert began in the supermarket industry at just 15 years of age. He can recall delivering groceries to some of the same loyal customers he has today on his pushbike as a teenager.
Robert’s story is the ultimate triumph paying off over years of hard work. It’s the story of a staff member starting at the bottom in the industry.
Through sheer determination Robert ascended through the ranks to become the manager and ultimately to buy the business - building a family empire spanning the generations.
Robert began his career in the industry working for Moran and Cato. The current Donges premises was opened in 1972 as Permewans and Robert stepped up as Store Manager.
While the business has seen many name changes over the years (including Giants, Halfcase, U-Market, Payless and Tuckerbag) – Robert has remained the constant captain steering the ship.
A locally owned & run independent…
Robert and his wife Julie purchased the supermarket in 1987 and continued to run it as a Payless until becoming an IGA ten years later.
Today Donges enjoys all the benefits of the IGA affiliation whilst maintaining the freedom of being an entirely locally owned and run independent supermarket.
The award-winning business has grown to encompass three generations of the Donges clan, sustaining local employment with close to 100 staff, and generating between $70-80,000 a year in support of community groups.
An ethos of giving back…
Giving back and an ethos of supporting the community that supports them is high on Donges SUPA IGA’s agenda.
From providing donations or sponsoring local events, school fundraising and sporting teams to hosting highly popular annual fundraising events, Donges is renowned for being highly active in the community.
Among the anticipated fundraising Donges events include the ‘Kids’ Day’ in September which provides a great low-cost day out for local families and the ‘Big Breakfast’ hosted as part of the Cherry Festival in December.
Exceptional customer service still a priority…
No matter what marketing gimmicks and fancy promotions other supermarkets employ, loyal Donges SUPA IGA customers keep coming back due to the priority given to ongoing exceptional customer service.
At Donges SUPA IGA, the supermarket is all about you – the customer. Donges pride themselves on a personalised approach, exceptional product range and customer service.
The history of excellence in customer service is ingrained in the culture and it is a proud component of what Robert has passed down to the next generation.
Donges make it their business to stock what you need. If you are looking for a particular product - just ask the helpful staff and they will get it in for you.
The supermarket has been home delivering for as long as Robert can remember. These days orders can be rung or emailed through and are delivered to your home in the specialty delivery van (which is definitely a step-up and much quicker than Robert delivering on his pushbike!).
